what I learned is that Stan Godlewski is a freelance photojournalist. Also, the situation that best lends itself to the silhouette is when there is a subject with a large and relatively simple shape in the foreground which is strongly lit from behind. This is a lighting situation that is best avoided when shooting normal exposures, but it is ideal for creating a silhouette. The background must be brighter than the subject – which from the photographer’s point of view should be in shadow – in order to achieve an exposure that will result in a black, distinct form against a bright, crisp background. The built-in metering system in most cameras is center-weighted, meaning that it is only a small area in the middle of the frame that is analyzed by the meter in order to determine the correct exposure. By keeping the main subject to the far left or right and allowing the center- weighted meter to do its work on the background, a proper exposure for a silhouette will be obtained.
